OVERVIEW

This unit covers basic principles in working within/around confined space. It includes the knowledge and skills for the use of appropriate gas testing equipment and methods to obtain representative results for the assessment of atmospheric condition in confined space for safe entry and work. The skill and knowledge covered will enable the learners to be appointed as confined space safety assessor under the relevant regulations.

The target audience of this competency unit may include:

  • Persons who want to obtain the knowledge to be competent for taking up appointment of a confined space safety assessor Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) professionals such as WSH Coordinators, Officers, and Auditors.
  • Occupational Hygiene (OH) professionals such as OH Technicians etc
  • Prepare for confined space assessment
  • Identify hazards and take measures in confined space
  • Conduct gas testing to ascertain the atmospheric condition in the confined space is safe for entry.
  • Participate in risk control and emergency response for entry into and working in a confined space.
  • Monitor the confined space conditions and control measures for safe work

On completion of this unit, the learner will have the knowledge and be equipped with the application skills in basic principles in working within/around confined space. This includes:

1. Use of appropriate gas testing equipment to ascertain that the confined space atmosphere is safe for entry and work.

2. Recognise the limitation of the test equipment used; calibrate the equipment and use it to obtain representative results for the assessment of confined space for safe entry and work.

3.  Monitoring the atmospheric conditions to ensure that it is safe for entry and work.

36 hours (Training) + 4 hours (Assessment)

Individuals will be assessed through various methodologies such as written questioning, written assignment, case studies, practical and oral questioning etc.
A Statement of Attainment (SOA) will be awarded upon completion of each unit.

Literacy requirements:
WSQ Employability Skills Workplace Literacy Level 6; or Grade C6 in GCE ‘O’ Level for English.

WSH Skills / Working experience requirements:
A)   WSH Skills & Knowledge equivalent to Certificate in WSH (Level A) / BCSS / SSSC / BISH / SWSPP   and

B)   2 Years of relevant working experience in operations and co-ordination of safety work.

  • From 1st Jan 2022, SkillsFuture course funding has been revised to a baseline of up to 50% of the Course fee for certifiable courses approved by SSG.
  • Enterprises and individuals who qualify for SSG’s enhanced subsidy schemes (SkillsFuture Mid-career Enhanced Subsidy and Enhanced
    Training Support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)) will receive an enhanced subsidy of up to 20% – points above the baseline course fee subsidies.
